THE GULF COAST
The gentle waters of the Gulf of Mexico wash the western shores of Florida, creating the famous sugary white sand beaches with their treasure trove of exquisite shells. Beautiful though the Gulf Coast is during the day, its sunsets alone are worth a flight to Florida! The Pinellas Suncoast is served by Tampa International Airport and the expanse of beautiful beaches along this 28 mile peninsular has made it a favourite tourist destination. From the “island town” of Madeira Beach to the popular Treasure Island, and vibrant Clearwater Beach, this is a family-friendly area with lots to do and see. South of Tampa Bay, an area of natural, unspoilt coastline embraces Anna Maria Island, home to Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach and Anna Maria. A relaxing atmosphere beckons and the island is within easy reach of Sarasota. Dubbed “the cultural capital of Florida,” sophisticated Sarasota is well endowed with museums, galleries, theatres and fine restaurants. A causeway over the sparkling waters of Sarasota Bay leads to the islands of Longboat Key and Lido Key where the Italianate layout of St. Armand’s Circle provides designer shops, boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. Longboat Key boasts miles of pristine beaches and Lido Beach is a favourite with beachcombers. Siesta Key is situated south of Sarasota city and is famed for its magnificent crescent beach. A casual beach community, the relaxed atmosphere of Siesta Key is enhanced by the colour of its abundant tropical flora and, of course, by the aquamarine waters of the Gulf.
